When using flat paper filters for the Orea V4, you need a way to correctly fit it into place on the brewer. Orea released the 3D files to print a tool, originally very niche, to help with that: the Negotiator. A cone with the same shape of the inner curve of the brewer, that would help fit any kind of paper into it reducing bypass and making the brews more consistent.
I seem to recall that Orea originally recommended a fast motion to fit the paper, which often times resulted in a bit of a mess of wrinkly paper. After I saw a video of Matteo D’Ottavio doing a bit of “origami”, I started making the folds by hand with these few steps:
- Fold the filter in half, crease it, fold it again; you should have a cross centered in the middle of the paper filter.
- Align the cross with the center of the Negotiator tip, and hold each crease to keep it in place with your right hand, using your thumb, index, ring, and pinky fingers.
- Fold against the Negotiator using your left hand.
- Put the paper inside the brewer, don’t remove the Negotiator, and rinse the paper. Twist the Negotiator while removing.
This is method is simply not easy to perform. Later, I saw this simpler method by ARAMSE that explains an easier way to get a very similar result without much fuzz.
In 2026, Orea finally addressed the new popularity of their “niche” tool and produced an updated version of it, that also came with the tulip, a little tool that makes consistent folding much easier. I started to using it in March 2026 along with the Negotiator V2 and it is a life changer: securely folds every kind of paper, including the more stubborn Type C ones.
