American modernist painter born in 1887 in Sun Prairie, United States. Known as the “Mother of American Modernism,” she is celebrated for her large-scale flower paintings, New York cityscapes, and luminous depictions of the New Mexico landscape. Early works demonstrate her pioneering approach to abstraction. Died 1986.
