As pointed out in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Isaac Newton was able to expand reason itself, just by the intuition that he needed a way to compute “instantaneous rates of change”, a concept that sounds unreasonable. However, working with it lead to conclusions that were not unreasonable at all (like working with points). Thanks to that, Newton was able to develop a new framework for reason: Calculus.
