The Lovers

Oil on canvas, 21 3/8 × 28 7/8” (54 × 73.4 cm). Two figures kiss with their faces shrouded in cloth, a haunting Surrealist image of desire thwarted by concealment. Painted in Paris, the veiled faces have been linked to Magritte’s childhood trauma of his mother’s drowning.
