Notes on the ongoing effort to make FL26 feel smooth on a 4K 60Hz TV driven by an AMD Radeon RX 6800. The game runs at a stable 60fps and reports clean frametimes (95th percentile ~17ms) but motion on horizontal camera pans feels noticeably choppier than the same game ran on a 1440p 144Hz desk monitor (also capped at 60fps).

The setup

  • Display: 4K 60Hz TV connected over HDMI 2.0 (594MHz pixel clock confirmed via CRU). True 60.000Hz panel, no VRR / FreeSync support.
  • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6800 (Adrenalin), driving the TV at 4K with RGB 4:4:4 Full pixel format.
  • Game: FL26 rendered at 1440p internal, output to the TV at 4K (the TV’s scaler does the 1440p → 4K upscale unless GPU-side scaling is forced).
  • Same game on a separate 1440p 144Hz monitor felt buttery smooth at 60fps. The TV setup does not.

Why the TV looks worse — the unfixable floor

  • Sample-and-hold persistence at 60Hz: every frame is held for ~16.7ms. The eye smears it during motion. This is the same on monitor and TV at 60fps, but the TV’s pixel response time is far slower (10–25ms GtG on most 4K LCDs vs 1–5ms on a gaming monitor), which compounds the perceived blur.
  • No VRR + no strobing/BFI: a 144Hz monitor smooths over hitches even when capped at 60. The TV cannot.
  • These two factors are panel physics — no software setting fully recovers monitor-class smoothness.

Final setup

  • In-game V-Sync: ON
  • RTSS: Limit=59930, LimitDenominator=1000 (59.93fps cap), Async limiter
  • AMD Adrenalin: Enhanced Sync OFF, FreeSync OFF (TV does not support it), Pixel Format RGB 4:4:4 Full, V-Sync = “Use application setting”
  • TV: Game Mode ON, all motion processing OFF (TruMotion / interpolation / judder reduction / noise reduction all disabled), HDMI input labelled as PC
  • Game render: 1440p internal

The 59.93fps cap (refresh − 0.07) keeps the render queue empty and avoids V-Sync backpressure — Blur Busters’ canonical “low-lag smooth 60” recipe. RTSS Scanline Sync was tried as a lower-lag alternative and did not improve anything in this setup, so it was dropped.

Verdict

The setup is usable but not monitor-class smooth, and that’s the ceiling. Confirmed by running TestUFO on the TV:

  • The default panning UFO is honestly smeary — sample-and-hold + slow pixel response at work.
  • The MPRT readability test is unreadable at motion speed — confirms poor motion clarity.

The panel is the bottleneck, not the config. No further software tuning will close the gap with the 1440p 144Hz monitor. A meaningful motion-clarity upgrade requires hardware: HDMI 2.1 + 120Hz + VRR, or OLED with BFI.
