A spatial index is a grid system that is quantified, hierarchical and relatively uniform representation of a map that is used to perform large data analysis on top of it.
A grid allows us to define a resolution on top of the map over which to perform the analysis, by bucketing the data in each of the grid cells. Filling the grid with different types of spatial joins.
