A talk by Bernhard Stadlbauer at GeoPython 2025. He reviewed some of the file formats that can be called cloud-native and can be use for GIS purposes. Some of the formats are:
Some takeaways of the talk:
- I really liked the insight that a cloud native format allows partial reads. Seems a very articulate way to express the basic characteristic of all of them.
- Do you just want to share data? Just use COG.
- If it gets too big, depends on the actual read-write pattern
- If it is multidimensional, some formats cannot even be taken into consideration; same if it is historical data.
